Revitalizing date palm production with an innovative method for sexing plants
29 April 2025
Since its foundation, the Fund for Innovation in Development has been focused on identifying the most effective solutions to reduce poverty and inequality. FID has now published its activity report, which takes a look back over four years of support for projects in the experimentation and initial assessment phases.
Over the last four years, FID has supported nearly 100 projects in 30 low-income countries, promoting the development of solutions in regions where public policy is not effectively meeting people's needs.
FID supports all types of solutions, whether technological, social or organizational, provided they address under-supported development challenges and have genuine potential to be more efficient than existing alternatives.
One of the things that sets FID apart is its support for projects in their infancy, particularly during the seed funding phase. Half of its portfolio includes projects in this phase, which enables the organizations leading them to test whether their ideas are feasible on the ground, validate their hypotheses and build their capacity for scale-up.
The activity report provides insight on the Impact Evaluation stage at FID, via which organizations can find answers to fundamental questions about the effectiveness of their programs. It also sheds light on two grants used by FID to support the scale-up of projects: the Stage 3 grant for the initial scale-up of a tried-and-tested solution, and the “Innovation and Public Policy” stage, where solutions are adapted for use by government services.
Between 2021 and 2024, innovative solutions supported by FID have targeted 3.5 million people, demonstrating their impact. These encouraging results show the potential of these projects to transform lives, and strengthen our belief that innovation can and must play a central role in reducing poverty and inequality.
« Our goal is to identify effective solutions to reduce poverty and inequality. Each stage of project development is accompanied by research activities and a tailored learning agenda, built on ongoing dialogue between innovation and research. »
